Puppy groom faq
“My breeder said no haircuts until 1 year old -is that true?”
This is a really common one, and we totally understand where it comes from!
The idea behind waiting is to protect the puppy coat while it transitions into an adult coat. However, in real life - especially with breeds like oodles -waiting that long can actually lead to severe matting, fear of grooming, and a much more stressful experience later on.
At Moggies & Mutts, we focus on:
-
Gentle, positive early introductions
-
Teaching your puppy that grooming is safe and normal
-
Maintaining the coat so it doesn’t become painful or matted
We don’t rush into full haircuts - we build confidence first.
“Why won’t you do a full haircut at my puppy’s first visit?”
Because your puppy’s first experience matters more than the haircut!
A full groom can be overwhelming for a baby:
-
New sounds
-
New sensations
-
Being handled all over
Instead, we start with a Puppy Perfection package listed above!
“When can my puppy have their first full groom?”
Usually between 4–6 months, depending on:
-
Coat type
-
Coat condition (matting vs well maintained)
-
Your puppy’s confidence level
Every puppy is different - we tailor the timeline to suit them, not a rulebook.
“What happens if I wait too long?”
This is where we see problems
-
Coats become matted (which is uncomfortable and sometimes painful)
-
Puppies become fearful of grooming
-
First groom ends up needing to be very short
Our goal is to avoid that completely by starting early and keeping things positive.
“How can I help at home?”
You are a huge part of your puppy’s grooming journey
We recommend:
-
Regular brushing (we can show you how!)
-
Getting them used to being touched - paws, face, ears
-
Keeping appointments consistent
Consistency builds confident dogs.
